New Education Offerings
- Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. is currently partnering with Fiber Insight LLC to offer two new classes at Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training located on the Honolulu Community College campus. These two new classes are CONA and CFCE. Both courses are 5-day long intensives, and every student who finishes either class will earn IEEE CEU (Continuing Education Units). The below are descriptions of what each class has to offer:
- CFCE is a five-day globally recognized certification course on understanding optical fiber network infrastructure and impairments that affect high-speed network performance, from optical loss to dispersion. It is a mix of theory, exercises, and practical lab work. In addition to class discussions, you will work in smaller groups to fully characterize a fiber link, document and analyze test results. The course culminates with a final exam. This course is most beneficial to those who wish to develop or improve skills and understanding in advanced fiber infrastructure testing – this includes technicians or engineers in outside or inside plant, managers and business owners.
- CONA is a globally recognized five-day certification course on optical networking and design. It is a mix of theory, discussion and exercises leading to execution of a design project. The course culminates with a final exam. At the end of the course, you will understand optical network theory, how to interpret link test data, system components, and the process of designing a 10Gb/s xWDM network. This course is beneficial to those who wish to develop skills in optical network design and in understanding how to interpret fiber network test results. Current or aspiring design engineers and managers supporting private, public or government networks will find this course helpful, and it is also valuable for those who manage contractors that provide those services.

A New Century at Exsell Sales Associates, Inc.
- This month has been a busy one and a great start to the new century for Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. We recently finished teaching a Fiber Optic Association Certified Fiber Optic Technician class at Honolulu Community College in the Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training department. It was a privilege to meet new students who have true interest in learning all they can about the fiber optic industry and receiving hands-on training that they can utilize in their daily jobs. In addition to our CFOT classes, we are now partnered with Fiber insight to offer Certified Optical Network Associate and Certified Fiber Characterization Engineer certification courses.
- Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. has also had the privilege in providing services on a number of projects this month, including Dignity Health – California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles World Airports, Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Police Department, Port of Los Angeles’s Police Department, and UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. We are honored and thoroughly enjoy being able to work with our clients on each of these projects.

Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. has recently completed a 4-month long project at the Sylmar Converter Station.
- Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. has recently completed a 4-month long project at the Sylmar Converter Station, in which we were subcontracted under Tri-Technic, Inc. who was contracted by ABB Group. The Sylmar Converter Station is the Pacific DC Intertie’s Southern-most station, where electricity sent from Oregon is converted from DC Voltage to AC Voltage. Fiber optics is necessary in this process to monitor and control the conversion.During this project, Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. had the task of splicing, OTDR terminating and testing fiber optic cables for continuity, and using red light lasers to confirm the proper labeling and landing of these cables. This latter task proved to be a unique challenge. Because the Sylmar Converter Station uses high strength lasers (the standard strength of red light lasers is Class 1, whereas Sylmar was Class 3 and Class 4), the cleanliness of any installed fiber optic cables is a critical. This level of strength means that even a single speck of dirt can be melted or burnt, which causes extreme issues with the fiber optic connectors. While cleanliness is always a priority, we had to make it our primary concern to ensure the connectors were immaculate. Another point of interest that occurred during the project related to the splicing performed by Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. ABB Group uses European fiber optic equipment. Thus the color coding for their fiber optic splicing follows the European standards, which is different from American standards. As a result, we had to figure out how to translate the fiber optic cables from European to American color coding standards.Overall, the project proved to be a success and Exsell Sales Associates, Inc. is very honored to have worked with Tri-Technic, Inc. and ABB Group.

Fiber Characterization Testing, Okinawa, Japan
- This work was done as a subcontractor to LGS Innovations, Herndon, VA. The project entailed doing detailed testing of fiber optic links to provide technical information on parameters such as insertion loss, optical return loss, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion and attenuation profile. Specialized test equipment was used to also inspect the quality of the fiber optic connectors. The ultimate question to be asked is whether the proposed links will support high speed (10 gigabits per second, 40 gigabits per second and 100 gigabits per second) Ethernet services. Numerous issues existed in the fiber network tested. Below are some examples.
